For those looking for my Share A Sale ThinkTank review, well due to some stupidity on my part I need to rewrite it. Don’t ask.

In the mean time, check out my interview I did on Chris Guthrie’s blog here

Chris is a good friend of mine who is also right here in the Seattle area. He has some great tips on building sites using the Amazon Associates program. He definitely knows his stuff.

Blog World Expo Recap

by on October 26, 2010

Well this won’t be too much of a review since I only got the expo pass for only one day, last Saturday. I was mainly traveling to ShareASale’s ThinkTank, so I figured I would make a quick stop in Vegas for BlogWorld.

I arrived first thing in the morning and met up with my buddy Logan Thompson and headed over to the expo hall. I have to say I was pretty disappointed in the size of the expo hall, granted I’m sure most of the people go to the sessions.

I heard over and over “How can I make money from or on my blog?” but yet there was only one CPA company, along with Share A Sale. It seems that some affiliate companies are missing out on some new affiliates.

So we walked around there for a little bit ran into some old friends, like Eric Schechter, Ryan Gray, Joe Sousa, Shawn Collins, and a few others.

Eric treated Logan, Ryan, and me to lunch, it was pretty good. We had some great conversation. After that I went back to the hotel to check in and went up to my hotel to take a nap, but ended going back to the show to check out the closing keynote with Logan, Chris Guthrie. The panel included Rob Barnett, Penn Jillette, Adam Corolla, Mark Malkoff, Cali Lewis and Jeff Hayzlett.

I have to say that Jeff Hayzlett is the only one who I pretty much got the most out of, so much so I ordered his book The Mirror Test: Is Your Business Really Breathing?

After that we all headed back up to our rooms and took a quick break before heading to dinner. After dinner I was so flipping tired that I just head back up to my room and went to bed. Believe it or not, it was about 10PM when I did, I was in Vegas, what was I thinking?

Tomorrow will be my SAS ThinkTank overview.

Early tomorrow morning I’m head to BlogWorld, Yea I know, Blogworld started a few days ago, but hey its Vegas and I have a day to kill before heading to Shareasale’s ThinkTank.

I’ve never attended BlogWorld, so I’m looking forward to checking it out. Due to my time limits I will pretty much walking around the BlogWorld exhibit hall on Saturday. I’ll be staying at the Luxor for just the night before heading to the airport on Sunday for San Francisco to attend ThinkTank.

ThinkTank is a small invite only conference that ShareASale puts on for their merchants, OPM’s, affiliates, and clients to get together to brainstorm ideas. I’ve heard about past events and really looking forward to attending this year. I know a lot of those who are going and looking forward to seeing them and making some new friends also.

I’m golfing on Monday with a few of my buddies. It’s going to be very interesting since I’ve only golfed a few times. I plan on buying enough golf balls to last me through the day.

Make sure you follow me on Twitter to see pictures and my tweets from both events.

Also if you’re heading to either of these event and you see me around, make sure to say hi!

Some forums can’t be run without some staff. So, what should you look for when hiring staff?

Well, you sure don’t want a bunch of unprofessional leaders on your staff. So, here are some tips on how to hire some good, trust able staff.

  • 1) You can’t stop the willing!
  • When hiring staff, you should always look for the person that is either most active or most helpful on your forum. Always make sure to pick the people that are most willing to do the job, because you don’t want your staff to find that visiting your forum is a task.

  • 2) Literary Analysis
  • One the most important things that I look for when hiring staff is how good their grammar is and how well their sentences are formed. Let’s face it, no one wants staff that can’t correctly form a sentence, it’s just unprofessional. Spelling is important, but not as important, most software has spell check built-in, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay attention to it.

  • 3) Past Experience
  • When you are hiring staff always look for the most experienced in your forum’s niche. Having the most experienced members as part of your staff will allow things to be done more efficiently, then someone who hasn’t had past experience.

  • 4) Communication
  • Can you easily communicate with the person you are planning to hire? Will you be able to contact them outside the forum (Skype, MSN, or Phone)? Communication is a key for preventing staff confusion. So, when hiring staff make sure there is another way to contact them outside of your forum.

  • 5) Are they truthful and have good behavior?
  • When hiring someone make sure to check that they haven’t been in any trouble or have caused in trouble in the past. Make sure that they are not banned on any other forums. Also, make sure their alias is not located on any “Malicious” sites or listed on any spam lists. You can simply ask them and if they do answer truthfully, then don’t penalize them. If they do lie to you, then don’t hire them, because if they lie to you before you hire them, then what’s going to stop them after?

So those are some basic tips that can help you Assembling your Forum’s Team. What are your tips for hiring staff? Also, what was your worst moment during hiring a staff member or being on a staff?

Read some very interesting news today. Internet Brands, the owners of vBulletin have filed a lawsuit against Kier, Mike, and Ashley; the developers of the new and upcoming Xenforo forum software.

I’m really surprised that they announced it in public. But then again the timing of the announcement is even more interesting to me, since Xenforo was going to start selling their early adapters beta version later this month, possibly starting this week.

I’m been following the development of the software, but not as close as a lot of others. I don’t have any plans to purchase Xenforo, but if I was thinking about it, this announcement of the lawsuit would for sure make me think about purchasing it.

So for those who are thinking about buying XenForo, will this lawsuit stop you from buying?

You can read the announcement here
