Forum Advice Friday #3

When should I put ads on my forum?

Well, I’m sure most of the people are going to disagree with me on this one.

But I almost say from the beginning. Now, I’m not talking about tons of ads in every little place that you can put them. Be subtle with them, maybe between the first and last post, maybe just a 728×90 header. But don’t overwhelm.

So why do I say from the beginning?

Well, as a member of a forum that didn’t have any advertising on it, then BAM! One day the forum was covered in ads, there was a massive revolt by the members and the forum eventually closed down due to lack of activity. Now did the owner put to many ads on the forum? Sure, but if they slowly worked in some over time the forum could still be going today.

Tell me your thoughts? When do you think the right time to place advertising on your forum.

Why another blog about forums? Great question, we are just a couple of forum owners who have built ours forums from the ground-up. We just wanted a blog for real life forum owners, with real life experiences.

I completely agree with you. I have run a site for years, and while the community has remained small, very few members ever leave because of a strong anti-spam and advertising policy. It keeps the community clean. I actually use an alternate .org domain to market my site and support it with ads. So users see ads when reading updates and browsing the store, but nothing when they are on the .net site.
