5 Activity Tips For Your Forum

Activity is the key aspect that attracts new members. If a visitor comes along and sees that last post was dated two weeks ago then the chances of the visitor joining your forum are zero to none. In this blog post I am going to share with you five tips to increase the activity on your forum to potentially increase the visitor to member ratio.

Condense Those Empty Sub-Forums!

There is nothing worse than turning up on a forum and they have 15 forums and 20 sub-forums with 0 posts in them. That is a major turn off to a visitor. It shows no discussion and makes your board look inactive. To combat this problem we need to condense our forums. If we condense those 15 sub forums to 1 or 2 forums. These forums will get more posts and threads therefore make your forum look much more active. As your forum grows you can then extend your forum and create those sub forums you wanted.

Give Your Users Something To Talk About

This applies to new forums more than old forums. Administrators, we have to give our users something to talk about. When a forum starts off, new members are very anxious about creating threads. This is why we have to create the threads for the discussions. Get your members more confident in posting by creating posts in your threads then gradually they will start to create their own threads and that is when you can start to relax from that area.

Everyone Loves a Competition

Another great way to spark activity is to start a competition. Give away something worth while, something that is value to a user. If you had a music forum you may give away free tickets to a concert or a gig. That will increase activity.

Don’t Wave Your Infraction/Warning Hammer

What I mean by this is let a few minor rule breaks in your forum go here and their. I remember being part of a forum and the global moderator was handing out infractions left, right and centre. He was penalizing every single rule break. This eventually drove everyone off the forum and forced the forum to close. So let a few rule breaks and spam go here and there to keep the conversation flowing, this will keep everyone posting.

Keep your members informed with hot topics and news that’s going about in your forum by sending out a newsletter. It may also get members who have left the forum to return as they might find a useful topic to them in the newsletter. This in turn will increase activity because you are adding in another poster to the forum.

Wrapping It Up

That is just a few ways to increase the activity in your forum but more importantly increase that visitor to member ratio on your forum.

Why another blog about forums? Great question, we are just a couple of forum owners who have built ours forums from the ground-up. We just wanted a blog for real life forum owners, with real life experiences.
